Re: Your first Head of Finance

Daryl K.
McCormick

I build the financial systems that let ambitious teams move faster with confidence—combining the rigor of complex programs, the range of a finance-and-operations leader, and the urgency of a founder.

01The finance thesis

Finance should increase the speed of a good decision.

The goal is not more finance. It is better signal: early enough to change the outcome, clear enough to act on, and rigorous enough to stand up in the boardroom.

02Mandate → evidence
01

Planning that drives decisions

What this role owns

Revenue, hiring, runway, GTM efficiency, and unit economics in one decision model.

Evidence I bring

Built Revel’s FP&A infrastructure from zero—linking capacity, utilization, cash, and revenue—while the firm grew revenue 28% and headcount 30% year over year.

02

Capital with a clear narrative

What this role owns

A long-range financial model, capital strategy, investor narrative, diligence process, and board-level financial communications.

Evidence I bring

Prepared executive operating reviews and business cases across multi-billion-dollar aerospace programs, translating complex cost and schedule signals into clear decisions.

03

Revenue architecture for scale

What this role owns

Pricing, contract structures, deal economics, and defensible revenue recognition for the shift from PLG into enterprise sales.

Evidence I bring

Managed program revenue recognition under GAAP at Northrop Grumman and now advises founders on profitability, scenario planning, and buy-side M&A analysis.

04

Control without drag

What this role owns

Audit-ready financials by 2027, with internal controls, documentation, reporting infrastructure, and a dependable close.

Evidence I bring

Owned monthly and year-end close, tax strategy, reporting, and compliance at Revel; built automation at Raytheon that reclaimed 2.5+ hours per analyst each close cycle.

03A proposed first year

0–30

Establish the signal

Reconcile the source data, map the current revenue engine, and build a driver-based model for runway, hiring, conversion, retention, and cash. Make one view the shared truth.

31–90

Set the cadence

Install a fast monthly close, weekly cash and growth reviews, clear budget owners, and decision thresholds. Pressure-test enterprise pricing and contract economics with GTM.

3–6 mo

Finance the next curve

Turn the operating model into a capital plan and investor narrative. Build a diligence room before it is needed and give the board a concise view of bets, tradeoffs, and downside cases.

6–12 mo

Build ahead of scale

Sequence controls, audit readiness, revenue recognition, tax, and the first finance hires around actual complexity—not ceremony. Prepare the function for enterprise and international growth.

Award-winning builder

Created a staffing and population planning model at Northrop Grumman that earned the Chairman’s Award for Innovation.

Founder’s perspective

Co-founded and shipped Terminal Buddy on iOS, working from concept through launch with technical teams, airport authorities, vendors, and users.

Technical curiosity

Built a self-hosted AI lab and is completing Harvard’s Agentic AI Foundations certification—learning the systems shaping Wispr’s market.

A live proof of concept: multi-jurisdiction VAT controls.

VAT exposure grows quietly. Controls have to keep pace.

I built this VAT Control Plane as a working reference architecture for a family-relocation business operating across multiple entities in Greece. It treats tax as a transaction-lifecycle problem, not a filing problem.

Products are classified by substance, rules are versioned and effective-dated, determinations are computed at the invoice line, and six approval gates make the control framework visible before any platform is replaced.

A revenue-recognition control checklist for a clinical-research client in preparation for audit season.

Built for a clinical-research organization, this checklist turns the ASC 606 five-step model into a repeatable review: contract identification, performance obligations, transaction price, allocation, and recognition timing.

Each step carries its red flags, the evidence required to support the conclusion, and the substantive tests to run—so revenue review is consistent before the auditors arrive, not reconstructed after.

A digital-twin financial model for a multi-site clinical research organization.

Nineteen linked worksheets—pipeline, enrollment, revenue recognition, staffing, three statements, EBITDA normalization, scenarios, and automated integrity checks—across thirty-six monthly periods and four operating sites.

Built as transparent decision support, not bookkeeping: study-level revenue recognition, budget-to-actual bridges, and scenario tools for pricing, timing, footprint, and liquidity. Sanitized end to end—100% synthetic illustrative data.

07Why Wispr

The keyboard taught me precision. Voice can unlock possibility.

My mother taught typing to high school students, and she made sure our family became fluent. I learned what a powerful interface the keyboard could be—and how much effort it asks from the person using it.

Wispr’s premise feels both ambitious and obvious: people should be able to express ideas at the speed they think. I want to build the financial engine that helps that interface earn the trust of millions.
